Kristina Comforte In Eighth Place At USA Championships

Incoming freshman gymnast Kristina Comforte (Burr Ridge, Ill.) stands in eighth place in the all-around after the first day of competition at the 2005 USA Championships at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. Comforte scored a 35.849 in the all-around in Thursday night's round.
Comforte, who was a member of the National Team in 2002-03 and 2003-04, scored a high of 9.333 on vault and also had a 9.15 on the uneven bars.
Two-time World gold medalist Chelsie Memmel leads the field with a score of 38.382, followed by Jana Bieger (37.615), Nastia Liukin (37.515), Alicia Sacramone (37.016) and Kassi Price (36.814). Comforte is less than one-tenth of a point behind sixth-place Annie DiLuzio (35.932) and seventh-place Kayla Hoffman (35.915).
Thursday's scores count 50 percent toward the total all-around and event scores used to determine individual national champions and the National Team. The other 50 percent will come from scores in Saturday evening's competition at 6 pm ET.
The first day of competition will be broadcast on NBC on Saturday, Aug. 13 at 8 pm. The final day's event will air on NBC on Sunday, Aug. 14 at 7 pm.
