Aug. 12, 2005

Pinehurst, NC - Washington senior golfer Paige Mackenzie won 6 and 4 in her quarterfinal match to advance to Saturday's semifinals at the 103rd North and South Women's Amateur Championship being held at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina.

Mackenzie jumped out to a quick lead in her match with Mollie Birmingham by winning the second, fourth, seventh and eighth holes to make the turn at 4-up. She closed the match out by winning the 13th and 14th holes.

Mackenzie will face Ya-Ni Tseng in the second semifinal match Saturday that starts at 8:10 a.m. EDT. Tseng won the 2004 U.S. Public Links Championship and advanced to the semifinals this year. Morgan Pressel, the defending champion, will meet Meghan Bolger, the head coach of Mississippi's women's team, in the first semifinal at 8 a.m.

Mackenzie has already picked up one victory in North Carolina this summer. She took top honors at the Trans Am by downing Duke's Elizabeth Janangelo 9 and 8 on July 24. That event was held in neighboring Southern Pines.
