Mackenzie Falls in Semis at North and South

Aug. 13, 2005

Pinehurst, NC - Washington senior golfer Paige Mackenzie was defeated in the semifinals of the 103rd North and South Women's Amateur Championship today at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina. Mackenzie lost to Ya-Ni Tseng on the 19th hole of play. Tseng will meet defending champion Morgan Pressel in Sunday's 36-hole final.

Tseng jumped out to a quick lead in the match by winning the first two holes. Mackenzie, the nation's third-ranked amateur player, evened things up by winning the sixth and seventh holes. Tseng regained the lead with a birdie on No. 10, but Mackenzie squared the match with a par on the 12th. The players halved the next three holes before Mackenzie grabbed her only lead of the 16th hole with a two-putt birdie.

The 16-year-old Tseng hit her tee shot to within three feet on the par-3 No. 17 to even the match. The players halved No. 18 and went to their first hole of extra play.

Both players made the green in regulation. Mackenzie's long birdie attempt slid by the hole and Tseng's birdie attempt came up short and was conceded. Mackenzie's six-foot par attempt broke just outside the hole giving Tseng the victory.
