Cyle Hankerd Leads Summer Team To League Championship

LOS ANGELES -- USC junior outfielder Cyle Hankerd (South Hills, Calif./Covina HS) earned the 2005 Rick Ligi Most Valuable Player Award after leading the Newport (Rhode Island) Gulls to the New England Collegiate Baseball League championship. Hankerd led the league with a .383 batting average (44-for-115), nine home runs, 10 doubles and 36 RBI.

The Gulls went 6-0 in the postseason with Hankerd going 12-for-24 (.500) with two home runs and five RBI, including a two-run homer in the Gulls' pennant-clinching 6-2 win against Vermont on Aug. 9.

Last season for USC, Hankerd batted .298 with a home run and 39 RBI as the Trojans advanced to the NCAA Super Regional for the fifth time in the past seven years.
