Aug. 14, 2005

SURREY, England - Incoming Arizona State freshman Azahara Muñoz finished second at the Girls' British Open Amateur Match Play Championship, held August 10-12 at the West Hill Golf Club in Surrey, England.

Muñoz, who comes to ASU from Malaga, Spain, just missed defending her 2004 championship in the event, falling to Anna Nordquist of Sweden 2 and 1 in the final match. Nordquist clinched the match on the 17th hole.

A total of 144 competitors played in the tournament with the top 64 advancing to match play after 36 holes of stroke play. Muñoz advanced to the championship final with a 4 and 3 win on the 15th hole over Great Britain's Florentyna Parker.

Muñoz was a member of Europe's Junior Solheim Cup Team in 2002 and 2003 and played on the Spanish team at the 2005 European Girls Team Championship.

Coming off back-to-back top 10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, fourth-year head coach Melissa Luellen and the Sun Devils open the 2005-06 season Sept. 6-8, traveling to Tokyo, Japan, for the TOPY Cup. ASU last traveled to Japan in 1998, winning the tournament that season.
