Aug. 15, 2005
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The University of California women's volleyball team, which last season finished 17-12 and advanced to the NCAA second round, is ranked 19th in the 2005 CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll. Cal has also been picked sixth in the Pac-10 Volleyball Coaches' Preseason Poll.
The Bears, coached by the 2003 AVCA Pacific Region and Pac-10 Coach of the Year Rich Feller (seventh year at Cal, 98-79; 21st year overall, 397-246), return five starters from the 2004 squad, including sophomore outside hitter Angie Pressey, a 2004 first team All-Pac-10 selection and a member of the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team. The Bears also feature senior middle hitter Alicia Powers and junior setter Samantha Carter, both honorable mention All-Pac-10 picks last season.
Cal's No. 19 ranking is only the fifth time in school history the Bears have been preseason ranked in women's volleyball. Cal was ranked No. 10 at the start of last season, No. 24 in 2003, No. 12 in 1983 and No. 9 in 1989. The Bears finished with a No. 18 national ranking at the end of the 2004 campaign after falling to Saint Mary's in the NCAA second round at Haas Pavilion. The Bears have been ranked a total of 49 times, including 18 times in the Top 10, reaching as high as a No. 5 ranking on Oct. 13, 2003. The highest Cal has ever been ranked at the end of a season was 10th in 1982.
The Bears, currently involved in two-a-day practices, open their season Friday, August 26 with an Alumnae match at 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion. Cal then begins its regular season, Saturday, August 27 versus UC Davis at 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion. The Bears then travel to the CenturyTel/Classic Honda Premier, Sept. 2-4 in San Marcos, Texas, before hosting the Golden Bear Invitational (Cal, Florida A&M, No. 18 University of San Diego), Sept. 8-10 at Haas Pavilion.
