Brooke Smith Helps USA at World University Games

Izmir, Turkey - Stanford junior Brooke Smith scored 8 points for the U.S. in today's 109-57 victory over Taiwan at the 2005 World University Games.

The U.S. finished the preliminary round with a perfect 4-0 record to take the top spot in Group B heading into the quarterfinals. Over the past week, the U.S. defeated China (107-54), South Africa (92-22) and the Czech Republic (88-64).

Smith has contributed in each of the five victories, averaging 7.2 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Against South Africa, Smith tallied 10 points and 12 rebounds. The Cardinal center is shooting 76.2% from the field and is a perfect four-for-four from the free-throw line.

The Americans will face Russia tomorrow in the first semifinal, while Serbia & Montenegro will challenge either Australia or Germany in the second semifinal contest. The gold and bronze medal games will both be played on Friday afternoon at the Halkapinar Sports Hall.
