California cruised to its third straight victory on its Italian tour by defeating host Trieste, 99-66, Thursday night. Senior guard Richard Midgley poured in 26 points and sophomore forward Leon Powe finished with 13 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Bears.
Junior guard Ayinde Ubaka recorded nine assists for the third consecutive outing, while also adding four steals and 10 points. In addition, sophomore guard Omar Wilkes (14 points), senior center Rod Benson (10 points) and sophomore center DeVon Hardin (10 points) turned in strong performances.
The Bears made 10 three-pointers during the game and were 13-for-20 from the free throw line.
Still based in Venice, the players had a chance to sleep in prior to the game, although several members of the team soaked up more of the atmosphere around the city during the morning hours. To get to the game, the team took a 20-minute water taxi ride to meet its bus, which traveled along the Adriatic coast to Trieste, a port city of about 240,000 located 80 miles from Venice.
The Bears move to Lake Como Friday - the final stop of their trip - and will play their final two games Saturday and Monday. Earlier, Cal beat Ge-Mart of Reggio Emilia, 111-66, Tuesday and KK Jance of Slovenia, 116-53, Wednesday.
