Brant Rustich Named Cape Cod League's 14th Best Prospect
Aug. 18, 2005
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Junior right-hander Brant Rustich has been rated by Baseball America as the Cape Cod Baseball League's 14th best prospect from the 2005 summer season. Rustich was 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA in 13 appearances for the League Champion Orleans Cardinals.
The El Cajon native allowed 22 hits in 26.1 innings pitched while striking out 24 batters this summer. He walked just five while holding opponents to a meager .229 batting average. Orleans' pitching staff led the always-competitive Cape Cod league with 2.22 ERA while posting nearly a 2.5 to 1 strikeout to walk ratio.
Rustich's lone start of the summer came on August 6 against the Hyannis Mets in a 4-1 Orleans victory. Rustich held the Mets scoreless over five innings of work while surrendering just three hits and striking out five.
Perhaps Rustich's best outing of the summer came on August 10 in a semifinal game against Chatham. Rustich entered in the fourth inning with Orleans trailing 2-1 and then went on to shutout Chatham over the final 5.1 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six. The Cardinals rallied to score four runs in the final three frames to earn Rustich his second victory of the summer. Ironically, taking the loss for the A's in the contest was Rustich's new college teammate, David Huff, who has signed to play at UCLA in 2006.
Said one national league cross-checker of Rustich in Baseball America, 'That was the best life on a fastball I saw all year -- power sink at 91-96.'
