Player Diary: Courtney Thompson

Aug. 18, 2005

Junior setter and tri-captain Courtney Thompson will be keeping a player diary throughout the 2005 volleyball season and will provide an inside look into the ins and outs of Husky Volleyball. Courtney's first installment is about the first week of practice and a birthday party for freshman Jessica Swarbrick.

We are now a week and a half into our season and it has been very fun, and of course, as always, very challenging. We have a lot of returning players and some very talented freshman, so the competition has been intense since day one. We compete really hard during practice and we have to if we want to win any of our drills. With as many weapons as we have, we can't let your guard down for one second or someone on the other side will make us pay- it's great. You can imagine, with all the competitive people we have on the team practice is really fun. There is always a challenge, always a fight, and always very high expectations.

We have had just as much fun hanging out off the court as we have beating each other up on the court. Our team has so many unique people and what is neat is that we appreciate each others differences so much; and quite often make fun of each other because of them. Jessica Swarbrick (one of our freshman) had her birthday last week, so we had a party for her at my house (I also live with Christal and Carolyn). The theme was 'a seven and under birthday party,' so we all dressed up like little kids and played some old-school games. It was great. Sanja and Jill won the egg toss, and Stevie was the only one who managed to cover her face in yolk even though we told her not to catch the egg in front of her face. I was just happy Danka didn't win because it seems as though every little game we play Danka wins no matter if it's dodge ball, ping pong, tennis...everything! After the egg toss, we ate some cake that Darla made for us. It was very pretty and everyone raved about how good it was. I attempted to make a chocolate cake but it didn't look like it was supposed to....yeah. And lastly, we sang Karaoke for hours and laughed so hard. Jill has quite the dance moves and Danielle doesn't have much of a voice. I think Sanja and Darla are getting better at their duets and Danka knows more USA patriotic songs than half our team. Christal is always impressive on the karaoke machine but I think Carolyn Farny really stole the show with her incredible voice and her costume. She dressed up as a parrot- I mean a full parrot suit- and it was the funniest thing to just watch her. It was a great night and we're looking forward to having many more in the future.

The team has been enjoying preseason thus far and is very anxious to start playing some games. We have a very large goal in front of us but we understand that the only way to reach it is to take the season one day at a time. We say 'every play, every day' and we know we have to keep working to get better. Improve every day and enjoy the process- that is what we do here at Washington.
