Aug. 19, 2005

BERKELEY, Calif. - DyeStatCal, the Internet home of California track and field, has ranked Cal's 2005 distance recruiting class No. 1 in the state of California.

Cal Poly was tabbed No. 2, and Stanford was picked No. 3. Rounding out the rankings are Long Beach State, Chico State, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly Pomona, UC Davis and UC Irvine.

The Golden Bears earned the top spot by signing three Footlocker finalists in Mark Matusak, Yosef Ghebray and Jake Schmitt. Matusak finished third at the 2004 Footlocker Nationals, while Schmitt placed 19th and Ghebray took 27th.

Matt Miller, who placed seventh at the 2004 state cross country meet, and Dawit Tesfassilassie, who was sidelined by injuries his senior year in high school, helped the Bears solidify their No. 1 ranking.

Cal opens the 2005 cross country season Sept. 3 at the San Francisco Invitational.
