Cal Blanks Sacramento State, 4-0, in Exhibition

BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 19 California opened the 2005 season with a 4-0 exhibition victory over Sacramento State Friday at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears open the regular season Aug. 26 at Saint Mary's before hosting Missouri in their home opener Aug. 28.
Cal jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals in the eighth and 10th minutes. Freshman Katherine Daiss scored first on a play that developed off a throw-in. Senior Tracy Hamm threw the ball off junior Katie Ratican's back and then delivered a perfect service to Daiss in front of the goal.
Schlesinger added an unassisted goal in the 67th minute with a blast to the upper-left corner of the goal. Senior Liz Eisenberg capped the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 89th minute.
Cal outshot Sacramento State, 20-1. Sacramento State goalkeeper Jennifer Lawrence secured seven saves, while Cal goalkeeper Anna Key didn't need to make a save.
Twenty-two players saw action for the Bears, who feature a deep lineup this season. Cal finished 2004 with an 11-6-3 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in the last seven years.
