Aug. 19, 2005
PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State women's golf team was recognized by the National Golf Coaches Association for having the fourth highest team GPA with a 3.625 during the 2004-05 season as announced by the organization, Friday.
'We had a great year both academically and competitively, and I am very proud of our accomplishments,' said WSU Head Coach Walt Williams.
The NGCA All-Scholar Team GPA Award is a brand new award which recognizes the women's collegiate golf program with the highest collective average team GPA, which includes all of the team's student-athletes for the 2004-05 season. This year's recipient was the University of Southern Carolina women's golf team, whose team averaged a 3.752 GPA.
Rounding out the top five of the list was the University of North Carolina - Wilmington (3.672), University of New Mexico (3.628), and Northern Arizona University (3.620).
In July, Cougars' Jay-Lee Longbottom and Maria and Anastasia Kostina were named to the National Golf Coaches Association Division I All-American Scholar Team for their academic accomplishments during the 2004-05 season. This recognition marked Longbottom's third straight all-scholar team honor, Maria's second consecutive selection, and Anastasia's first team appearance.
The three Cougars were among 199 women's collegiate golfers recognized. The criteria for selection to the team are a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 66 percent of the school's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
In addition to topping the charts in the classroom, the Cougars finished amongst the top 25 teams in the nation. Last season, Washington State went on to compete at the 2005 NCAA West Regional, which marked the fourth consecutive year the Cougars have been selected to participate in the championships, and the fifth time in six years.
'It will be tough to replace Maria and Jay-Lee, both on the course and in the classroom,' said Williams. 'But it will definitely be fun trying.'
