Cal Ranked 19th In First Associated Press Poll

Aug. 21, 2005

BERKELEY - For the second consecutive season, the California Golden Bears football squad will begin the season ranked among the nation's top 25 by the Associated Press.

California is 19th in the first AP poll of the season, released Saturday by the wire service. The Bears join top-ranked Southern California and No. 20 Arizona State as the only Pacific 10 Conference members represented in the AP preseason poll.

For Cal, the preseason ranking has historical significance. The Bears have now appeared in the AP preseason poll in consecutive seasons for the first time since making the preseason rankings in five straight years from 1950 through 1954. The 2004 Bears began the season ranked 13th.

In the previously announced ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, Cal is ranked No. 20.
