PAC-10 NOTES

CONFERENCE OF CHAMPIONS - With STANFORD winning the 2004 NCAA title, the Pac-10 has now captured four consecutive NCAA crowns (2004 - Stanford, 2003 - USC, 2002 - USC, 2001 - Stanford) and 12 NCAA titles overall - that's half of the 24 titles presented by the NCAA... With WASHINGTON's appearance in the national semifinals last year, the Pac-10 has been represented by five institutions (ARIZONA, Stanford, UCLA, USC, and Washington) at the Final Four.

AROUND THE LEAGUE - ARIZONA senior OH Kim Glass opens the season with 1,526 career kills. That ranks her third on Arizona's career list and puts her 334 kills away from the school record... Arizona coach David Rubio needs six victories to become Arizona's career victory leader. His record entering his 14th season is 253-135. He'd pass former Wildcat coach Rosie Wegrich (258-229-9/15 seasons)... ARIZONA STATE opens the season with five of its first six matches against teams that participated in last season's NCAA Tournament... CALIFORNIA's Rich Feller needs two wins to reach 100 victories as coach of the Golden Bears, and three wins would give him 400 career victories... Cal will be looking for a school-record fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament... Jim Moore takes over at the helm of the OREGON Ducks. Moore has a 352-156 (.693) record in 16 seasons as a coach. His trail of coaching duties included stops at Northern Michigan, Kansas State, Texas, Chico State and Northern Michigan for a second time. Moore led Northern Michigan to the NCAA Division II title in 1993... There's a new coach in Corvallis as well, with Taras 'Terry' Liskevych taking over the OREGON STATE program. Liskevych spent 11 seasons (1985-1996) as coach of the U.S. National Team... How do you spell that? On the OSU roster, you'll find Caitlin Zimbrick, Kaitlyn Myers, and Katelyn Healy... STANFORD's John Dunning has averaged 30 wins in each of his first three seasons on The Farm.... The Cardinal have appeared in the top 10 in every coaches' preseason poll since the AVCA started the coaches poll in 1982... UCLA coach Andy Banachowski, now in his 39th season as the Bruins' mentor, is 16 wins shy of 1,000... The Bruins are the last Pac-10 team to get the season underway as they open up against Eastern Kentucky at the Sands/SBC Tournament in Reno, Nev. on Fri., Sept. 2... USC's senior MB Bibiana Candelas is the tallest player in the Pac-10, standing 6-5. California sophomore DS Vivian Cheung is the shortest at 5-1... WASHINGTON is ranked No. 2 in the USA Today/CSTV Preseason poll, it's the highest preseason ranking in school history... Senior L Candace Lee has 1,508 career digs, good for seventh on the Pac-10's all-time list. With 21 digs, she'll move into the top five... The Huskies are shooting for a school record-tying fourth consecutive 20-win season... Besides Stanford and its win over No. 4 Minnesota in the NCAA championship match, WASHINGTON STATE is the only other Pac-10 school to finish the 2004 season with a win over a ranked opponent. The Cougars capped off the year with a victory over No. 6 USC.
