TEMPE, Ariz. (www.thesundevils.com) -- Coming off a third-place finish in the College World Series, Arizona State University head baseball coach Pat Murphy announced the arrival of a banner recruiting class that will begin play on the diamond in 2006.

A total of 13 newcomers enrolled and attended classes Monday at the Tempe camps and 20 returning letterwinners are back to start another journey on the Road to Omaha.

The 13 newcomers include six freshman and seven transfers. 1B/LHP Ike Davis (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral HS), INF Matt Hall (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon HS), 3B Brett Wallace (Sonoma, Calif./Justin-Siena HS), C Preston Paramore (Allen, Texas/Allen HS), LHP Jeff Urlaub (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon HS) and RHP Jake Borup (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View HS) make up the freshman class.

The seven transfers include outfielder Ryan Sontag (Newport, Mich./Michigan State), RHP Matt Trink (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon HS/Yavapai College), INF/RHP CJ Retherford (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton HS/South Mountain CC), RHP Brady Martinez (Price, Utah/Carbon HS/Utah), RHP Brett Bruneel (Stockton, Calif./Bear Creek HS/San Joaquin Delta College), INF Ben Bando (Solon, Ohio/Lakeland Christian/The Master's College) and INF Todd Wells (Claremont, Calif./Claremont HS/Chaffey College).

The newcomer class includes five freshman that were selected in the 2005 MLB Amateur Draft. Hall (8th rd./Angels), Davis (19th rd./Devil Rays), Paramore (22nd rd./Mets), Urlaub (26th rd./Devil Rays) and Wallace (42nd rd./Blue Jays) all opted against signing a professional contract to attend college. Trink has also been drafted twice by the Blue Jays, most recently in the 39th round in 2004.

The returning letterwinners are highlighted by senior pitchers Brett Bordes (LHP) and Tony Barnette (RHP); juniors Colin Curtis (OF), Zechry Zinicola (RHP/1B), Joe Persichina (INF) and Pat Bresnehan (RHP); and sophomores J.J. Sferra (OF), Andrew Romine (SS), Willy Fox (DH/1B). Senior catcher Joel Bocchi and freshman pitcher Drew Bowman are both coming off redshirt seasons and infielder Frank Mesa, a starter during the 2003 season, returns to the roster. All total, the fall roster features 20 returning letterwinners. ASU is coming off a 42-25 season in 2005 in which they advanced to the College World Series for the 19th time in school history.
