Golden Bears Showcase Talent at World Championships

HELSINSKI, Finland - Current California coaches Phil McMullen and Jennifer Joyce, along with former track and field athletes Grace Upshaw and Kristin Heaston, competed in their respective events at the IAAF World Championships, August 6-14, in Helsinski, Finland. McMullen, Upshaw and Heaston were all members of the United States team, while Joyce competed for Canada.

McMullen, Cal's pole vault and high jump coach represented the United States in the decathlon. He accumulated 6832 points in 10 events, finishing No. 17. McMullen currently ranks No. 16 in the IAAF World Rankings.

Representing Canada Joyce competed in the qualifying round of the hammer. She finished 11th with the mark of 64.34 meters. This year will be Joyce's third with the Golden Bears throwers coach.

Upshaw finished seventh in the long jump with a mark of 21-4 feet. Upshaw's 1997 jump of 20-5.75 feet tied her for fourth on Cal's All-time top 10 long jumps list.

Heaston competed for the United States in the shot put qualifying round. She finished ninth, three slots short of the finals with a mark of 57-6.25 feet. Heaston holds Cal's school record in the shot put (54-4.75 feet) set in 1999.
