Husky Football Camp: Two-A-Days At An End
Aug. 24, 2005
Wednesday marked the final double-day of practices for the Husky football team as the fall camp continued to near its end. The Huskies will practice just a couple more times before getting into the more standard 'game week' beginning Monday.
Often, the last day of two-a-days marks the unofficial end of fall camp. However, with the recent rules changes that have made teams spread their two-a-days over a longer span, those old norms no longer really apply. Essentially now, fall camp ends when the week of the first game finally arrives.
Addressing the press Wednesday afternoon, Coach Tyrone Willingham kept pretty much with what he's been saying throughout the last couple of weeks. Namely, competition for starting spots continues and, while overall progress continues to be made, there's still room for improvement.
Willingham started by addressing Wednesday's morning workout, in which the team worked out in full pads.
'I think it went well,' Willingham said. 'I think we're starting to do more things that you'd expect from a good football team. We're still not there. We still have the normal problems that you have: assignments, alignments, etc., but that's all part of football. Our goal is to, each day, try to eliminate those so that we can progressively get better.'
As would be expected, Willingham continues to field questions about which players will make the starting lineup.
'We've been the process of trying to sort those out all of camp,' Willingham explained. 'We probably won't have any final decision on those until game week at some point.'
'I'm not that concerned about having all this identified tomorrow,' he continued. 'As long as we have everything squared away by September 2, and really by September 3 at 12 noon, I'm okay.'
Of course, the question of the starting quarterback has been the biggest mystery. Willingham, however, noted the quarterbacks have handled the competition well.
'I don't think they view it as pressure,' Willingham said. 'I think they view it as just going out and doing what they can do. That's the same way we look at it as coaches. We're just letting them determine who should be the starting quarterback.'
Overall, Willingham has been happy with the team's effort and spirit during the camp.
'I think they've done a great job of being extremely cohesive and confident in the work that we've asked them to give us,' Willingham said.
After Thursday afternoon's second practice, the team has a single practice scheduled Friday.
