Men's Soccer Rallies For 2-1 Exhibition Win Over Drake

Aug. 24, 2005

Des Moines, Iowa - The Stanford men's soccer team rallied late in the match to notch a 2-1 exhibition win against Drake in front of a record crowd of 1,017 at the Cownie Soccer Complex Tuesday night.

The 1,017 spectators at the match set an attendance record not only for the Drake men's soccer team, but it was also a Cownie Soccer Stadium record as well as a Division I record for men's soccer in Iowa.

The Bulldogs took advantage of a Cardinal defensive breakdown in the 37th minute as Jake Henneman drove towards an open net. Stanford, which advanced to the 2002 NCAA Tournament championship match, tied the game in the 73rd minute on a penalty kick by freshman T.J. Novak (Fenton, Mo.) following a foul in the box. The game-winning goal was netted four minutes later on a header by fellow frosh Alex Kozachenko (Fremont, Calif.).

Stanford goalkeeper Andrew Kartunen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) held off Drake's onslaught in the first half with four of the Cardinal's seven saves as the Bulldogs landed eight shots on goal.

The Cardinal is back in action with another preseason exhibition game on Friday against Creighton.
