Derting Named To 2005 Butkus Award Watch List

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State linebacker Will Derting was named to the 2005 Butkus Award watch list, it was announced by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando Thursday.
The trophy, named in honor of Dick Butkus, a past All-American at the University of Illinois and NFL All-Pro player with the Chicago Bears, is awarded annually to the outstanding linebacker in college football.
Derting earned second team All-Pac-10 honors, racking up 93 tackles in 2004, including 11.5 behind the line of scrimmage with 3.5 sacks. The senior from Okanogan, Wash., notched a career-high 14 tackles against No. 1 USC with 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Derting earned first team All-Pac-10 honors in 2003 and was twice named the conference's defensive player of the week following performances against Notre Dame and Oregon State that year.
The preseason honors continue for the Derting, who has already been named to the 2005 Lombardi Award, Lott Trophy, Ted Bednarik Award and Bronko Nagurski Award watch lists.
Derting is one of 65 players on the 2005 Butkus Award watch list, joining fellow Pac-10 linemen Jon Alston of Stanford, Trent Bray of Oregon State, Spencer Havner of UCLA, Joe Lobendahn of Washington and Dallas Sartz of Southern California.
The Butkus Award selection committee will trim to 10 semi-finalists on Oct. 20 with the three finalists to be announced on Nov. 10. The winner will be announced Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005, at the Butkus Award Gala in Orlando, Fla.
