No. 19 Cal Edges Saint Mary's, 2-1, in 2OT in Season Opener
Aug. 26, 2005
MORAGA, Calif. - Senior forward Liz Eisenberg scored a goal in the 108th minute to lift California to a 2-1 double overtime victory over Saint Mary's Friday at Saint Mary's Stadium in both teams' season opener. This marks the Golden Bears' sixth consecutive season-opening win.
Saint Mary's took a 1-0 lead in the 71st minute when Sarah Churchill scored directly off a corner kick which bent in off the fingertips of Cal goalkeeper Ashley Sulprizio.
Cal senior forward Dania Cabello evened the score at one-all with a rebound goal in the 86th minute. Following a Bears' throw-in from the right sideline, the ball was played into the front of the Gaels' goal. Saint Mary's goalkeeper Andrea Lee punched out the loose ball right to a waiting Cabello.
With less than three minutes left in the final 10-minute overtime period, Eisenberg received a through pass from sophomore midfielder Chioma Igwe on the right sideline. Eisenberg beat the Gaels' defense and netted the game-winning score from about 10 yards.
In 2004, Eisenberg led Cal with three game-winning goals, and Igwe tied for the team lead in assists with five.
Cal held an 11-8 shot advantage today, with Eisenberg leading the way with three shots. Sulprizio secured five saves, while Lea grabbed two saves. The Bears were fresh for overtime as 21 players saw action.
The Bears face Missouri in their home opener Sunday, Aug. 28 at noon at Edwards Stadium.
