USC Falls 4-0 In Home Opener With FSU
Aug. 26, 2005
LOS ANGELES -- The USC women's soccer team suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Florida State in the Trojans' 2005 home opener at McAlister Field on Friday afternoon. The Seminole strikers broke through the USC defense midway through the first half when Viola Odebrecht chipped her shot over goalkeeper Veronica Simonton (Chino Hills, Calif./St. Lucy's Priory) to give FSU a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute of play. The loss puts the Trojans at 0-1 this season, and FSU is off to a 1-0 start.
The Women of Troy pushed the Seminole defense to the edge on several occassions in the first half, but was unable to get to the back of the net. Freshman forward Nini Loucks (Canyon Country, Calif./Canyon HS) took a shot from a tough angle deep in FSU territory, but the shot went side. Later in the first, freshman forward Amy Rodriguez (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita HS) got on the attack to force a corner kick for the Women of Troy. Freshman Stacey Strong (Santa Rosa, Calif./Montgomery HS) lofted her kick into the mix in front of the goal, where Rodriguez was able to put two strong touches on the ball. Both shots were thwarted by Seminole defenders on the goal line, leaving the score at 1-0 entering the second half of play.
In the second half, FSU struck early when a hard shot from Melissa Samokishyn was stopped by Simonton but got loose, enabling Ceci Shell to punch in the score for a 2-0 FSU lead. FSU got deep in Trojan territory twice more, and was able to tack up two more goals off of a pair of tough shots -- first on a bender from Sel Kuralay at the 15:30 mark, and then again on a left-footed shot from India Trotter that went crosscage to make it 4-0.
USC gets right back to action this weekend. The Trojans will host Indiana on Sunday (Aug. 28) at 1 p.m.
