Third-Ranked Bruins Blank Long Beach State, 3-0 in Season Opener
Aug. 26, 2005
LOS ANGELES - The third-ranked UCLA women's soccer team looked impressive in its 2005 season opener Friday evening, shutting out local foe Long Beach State, 3-0 in front of 728 fans at Drake Stadium.
UCLA, the national runner-up a year ago, wasted little time getting on the board, as sophomore Danesha Adams tallied the Bruins' first strike of the season in just the 10th minute of play. Midfielder Stephanie Kron hit a deep corner kick that was controlled on the left side by Jill Oakes. Oakes drove a ball into the box that was volleyed by Adams past the outstretched hands of Long Beach State goalkeeper Meghan Hartwyk.
Following the goal by Adams, play remained scoreless for the next 34 minutes until another strike by the Bruins just before halftime. Like Adams did in her UCLA debut a year ago, freshman McCall Zerboni managed to score in her first collegiate game, giving the Bruins a 2-0 advantage. Junior defender Mary Castelanelli served a ball into the box that was mishandled by Hartwyk, who had come out to retrieve it. Zerboni made the most of the opportunity, sending in the loose ball from about seven yards out.
With the Bruins up 2-0, junior Caitlin Ursini capped the scoring for UCLA in the 61st minute following a cross by Adams into the box. That ball found the head of freshman Kara Lang, whose shot was stopped by 49er reserve goalkeeper Liz Ramos. The rebound, however, was run onto by Ursini, who found the back of the net for UCLA's third goal of the match.
UCLA goalkeeper Valerie Henderson got the nod in goal, facing just two shots on the evening as the Bruins outshot the 49ers 20-2 on the night. Hayley Bolt had both Long Beach State shots.
UCLA's opening day lineup featured a balanced group of two seniors, three juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen. The Bruins' starting back line consisted of Oakes, Castelanelli, Lindstrom and freshman Erin Hardy. The midfield featured Kron, Ursini, Adams and DiMartino. Lang and Iris Mora were the starters up top. In addition to Hardy, Lang, DiMartino and McCall Zerboni, two other UCLA freshmen made their collegiate debuts Friday, as Caitlyn Mac Kechnie and Blake Zerboni also logged significant minutes.
The Bruins will be in action again this Sunday, taking on the University of San Diego at Torero Stadium in San Diego. Match time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
