No. 19 Cal Ties Missouri, 0-0, in 2OT in Home Opener
Aug. 28, 2005
BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 19 California opened its home schedule with a 0-0 double overtime tie against Missouri Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium.
'I thought we played better than we did Friday,' Cal head coach Kevin Boyd said. 'Friday was a little bit more of a chaotic game for both teams. We weren't possessing the ball as well as we need to. If you don't possess the ball, you're not going to create very good opportunities. That was the sum of today. We were trying. Today was better for possession. We still need more out of us. It looks like it's the first weekend of the season.'
The Golden Bears held a 13-10 shot advantage in regulation and had several quality chances to avoid overtime. In the 68th minute, forward Julia Schnugg's blast was saved by Missouri goalkeeper Laura Buehrig. About 15 minutes later, forward Dania Cabello headed forward Liz Eisenberg's pass just over the top of the crossbar.
'Today, from the second half on, it felt like it was our game to win,' Boyd said. 'We just didn't put it away.'
With less than three minutes remaining in the first overtime period, Cabello had an apparent goal waved off due to an offsides call.
Forward Katie Ratican delivered three dangerous shots in the first six minutes of overtime, with Buehrig corralling a save on the first attempt, and the final two shots nearly found the inside of the right post.
Eisenberg posted the Bears only shot in the final overtime period. Cal held a 17-12 overall shot advantage in the game.
Goalkeeper Ashley Sulprizio secured five saves for Cal, while Buehrig tallied five. Tiger defenders also stopped two Cal shots from finding the back of the net.
The Bears opened their season with a 2-1 come-from-behind double overtime victory at Saint Mary's on Friday. Cal played 21 players in both games this year.
The Bears next faces Montana in the first round of the 11th-annual Cal Invitational Friday, Sept. 2 at 4:30 p.m. Edwards Stadium. The tournament begins with Saint Mary's facing UC Santa Barbara at 2 p.m.
