No. 19 Cal Volleyball Defeats UC Davis, 3-0

BERKELEY, CA - Behind the strong hitting of sophomore Angie Pressey and senior Alicia Powers, the No. 19-ranked Cal women's volleyball team (1-0) started off the 2005 season on a high note with a 3-0 (30-15, 30-16, 30-20) victory over UC Davis (0-2) in the season-opener Saturday night at Haas Pavilion. The win over the Aggies gave Bear coach Rich Feller his 99th victory at Cal since taking over the program in 1999.
Pressey and Powers led the Bears with 13 kills apiece, while Pressey also notched a career-high six service aces and had a .750 (13 kills, one error, 16 attempts) hitting percentage. Senior captain Powers also hit well with a .417 hitting percentage (13 kills, three errors, 24 attempts) and two service aces. Senior Jenna Brown and freshman Morgan Beck added seven kills apiece, and junior Jillian Davis and senior Alexis Kollias also had two service aces on the evening. Junior setter Samantha Carter finished with 39 assists and a team-high eight digs.
The Bears out hit the Aggies, .367 to .025. UC Davis was led by Chantal Paschetta and Rachel Keener with five kills apiece.
Cal will next travel to the CenturyTel/Classic Honda Premier, Sept. 2-4 in San Marcos, Tex. The Bears begin the tournament against host Texas State, Friday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. The Bears then face Morgan State Saturday, Sept. 3 at 12:30 p.m. and Albany on Sunday, Sept 4 at 1 p.m. Both Texas State and Albany made the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year. Cal has won seven regular season tournaments in the past three seasons.
