USC Heats Up For 6-0 Win Over Indiana

Aug. 28, 2005

LOS ANGELES -- The No. 18 Women of Troy tacked up a number of firsts in Sunday's 6-0 win over Indiana. After a disappointing loss to Florida State on Friday, USC made sure to get on the board first in Sunday's match, and the Trojans stayed in control throughout on the way to their first win of the 2005 season. Lauren Brown (Chino Hills, Calif./St. Lucy's Priory), Meagan Holmes (Timonium, Md./Dulaney HS) and Amy Rodriguez (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita HS) all notched their first collegiate goals in the win. The victory puts USC at 1-1, and Indiana is now 0-1-1.

'It was a solid effort today,' USC head coach Jim Millinder said. 'It was a bounce-back game for us. The speed of play, spacing and ball movement were excellent today.'

Standout junior forward Rosa Anna Tantillo (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla HS) set the tone for the Trojans' offensive flurry in the game with a swift and early goal from the right side off an assist from junior defender Hillary Schwarzbach (Santa Cruz, Calif./San Lorenzo Valley HS). With a lift and lead just 11 minutes into the game, the Women of Troy were able to settle in and continue to mount strikes against the Hoosier defense. At the 22-minute mark, Tantillo lined up for a corner kick, lofting the ball to the face of the goal. Freshman midfielder Ashley Nick (Monrovia, Calif./Arcadia HS) got a head on it, putting it at the feet of freshman defender Holmes. Holmes skidded the ball in off an Indiana defender to register her first collegiate goal and put USC up 2-0.

Still more scoring was in store for USC in the first half. Freshman forward Rodriguez got loose up front, taking a ball pushed up from Tantillo and blazing to the goal for a left-footed shot that ballooned the Trojans' lead to 3-0. Just over a minute later, Brown made her successful strike off an assist from freshman forward Nini Loucks (Canyon Country, Calif/Canyon HS).

Although Indiana picked up the pressure in the second half, the Trojan strikers still had more left in them. USC goalkeeper Veronica Simonton (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala HS) delivered a long punt down the middle of the field that Brown chased down, stayed onsides and punched past charging goalkeeper Lauren Fabbro for a 5-0 lead. Brown later dished up an assist to senior midfielder Amy Mann (Alamo, Calif./San Ramon Valley HS), who took Brown's short cross from deep in Hoosier territory and chipped it to the back of the net.

USC's next game is against UC Irvine. The Trojans play the Anteaters in Irvine on Sunday (Sept. 4) at 1 p.m.
