2005 Season-Opener: Bruins at San Diego State

SEASON OPENER -- UCLA opens the 2005 season on Sept.3 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego against the Aztecs ofSan Diego State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m PDT. Thecontest will be televised nationally by ESPN2. Pam Ward andDavid Norrie (former Bruin quarterback, '82-85) will call theaction. Alex Flanagan will be on the sidelines.XTRA Sports 570 and the Bruin Radio Network broadcasts allof the Bruin games with Chris Roberts and Matt Stevens inthe booth. Wayne Cook will work the sidelines.This begins UCLA's 87th season of football. The Bruins are 55-26-5 overall in openers. Oklahoma State bested the Bruins,31-20, in the Rose Bowl in last season's opener.

THEN AND NOW -- The Bruins finished the 2004 season witha 6-6 mark after dropping a 24-21 decision to Wyoming in thePioneer Pure Vision Las Vegas Bowl. It was the seventh timein the last eight seasons that the Bruins concluded the regularseason qualified to play in a bowl. The Bruins went 4-4 inthe Pac-10 to tie for fifth place.

UCLA returns 15 positional starters from 2004 -- seven on offense,eight on defense, plus its placekicker. All but one ofthe offensive positions (tackle) returns a player who startedat least one game last season. Free safety and a cornerbackspot are the only defensive positions not to return a playerwho made at least one start a year ago.

Key losses from last season include RB Manuel White (secondon team in rushing, 764 yds.-Redskins camp), WR CraigBragg (all-time receiving leader at UCLA,193 catches-Packerscamp), WR Tab Perry (all-time school leader in kickoffreturns-Bengals camp), OG Steven Vieira (43 career starts-Bengals-camp), CB Matt Clark (first-team All-Pac-10-Saintscamp), S Ben Emanuel (39 career starts-Panthers camp), PChris Kluwe (Ray Guy Award finalist-Seahawks camp).
