Cardinal Men Open Regular Season At San Jose State
Aug. 29, 2005
Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford men's soccer team (0-0-0) will kick off the 2005 regular season on Thursday, September 1 at San Jose State (0-0-0), in a 7 p.m. non-conference game in Spartan Stadium. It is the season opener for both teams. The Cardinal will then take on UC Davis on Sunday, September 4 at 1 p.m. in Davis to close out the first week of play.
The Cardinal picked up two exhibition wins last week with victories over Drake (2-1) and Creighton (1-0) before opening play this week. Freshmen T.J. Novak (Fenton, MO) and Alex Kozachenko (Fremont, CA) scored Stanford's goals against the Bulldogs while junior Galen Thompson (Denver, CO) scored the game winner against the Bluejays.
Stanford looks to improve on a 7-6-5 season last year and a 2-4-2 record in the Pac-10 conference in 2005.
The Cardinal hold an 18-11-3 advantage in the all-time series against the Spartans and have won the last four meetings between the two teams including a 1-0 victory in 2004. The last SJSU win over Stanford came in 1998 (W, 2-1).
Stanford leads the all-time series with UC Davis, 9-3-2. This is the first meeting between the two teams since 1990 when the Cardinal lost, 1-2, in double overtime. Stanford has gone 3-1-1 in the last five contests with the Aggies. UC Davis takes on Oregon State on Thursday before hosting the Cardinal.
Stanford continues its five game road trip next week, when they travel across the bay to Berkeley to take part in Cal's tournament. They will face Cal State Northridge on Friday, September 9 at noon and Vanderbilt on Sunday, September 11 at noon.
