Aug. 30, 2005
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA freshman forward Kara Lang has been named the Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week for Aug. 26- Aug. 29, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Lang, from Oakville, Ontario, tallied seven points in her first two collegiate matches, including a hat trick in the Bruins' 4-1 victory over San Diego on Sunday. Her first goal of the match came on a 30-yard free kick. In her UCLA debut on Friday, she added an assist in the Bruins' 3-0 season-opening victory over Long Beach State.
Leading the team in both shots and assists during both matches, Lang becomes the 13th player (and seventh freshman) to record a hat trick since the program's inception in 1993. She is the youngest member to ever play with the Full Canadian National Team, and holds the world record for the youngest player to ever score in a full international match.
The Bruins (2-0) were picked by the coaches to win the Pac-10 women's soccer title this season and were ranked third in all three preseason polls. They enter the season coming off a double overtime loss in the 2004 NCAA Finals to Notre Dame. UCLA will face No. 21 Princeton and Florida Atlantic this week at the Miami Tournament in Miami, Fla.
This is Lang's first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and UCLA's 15th weekly honor all-time.
