Kontura Leads USA to Jr. Pan Am Championships

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - California diving coach Ron Kontura led the United States to team championships in boys and girls' diving at the Junior Pan American Diving Championships held Aug. 25-28 at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex.
The four-day event showcased the top junior divers from the United States and six other countries. Team USA was divided into eight teams, with four boys' teams and four girls' teams. Each side consisted of an 11-year-old and under team, a 12-13-year-old team, a 14-15-year-old team and a 16-18-year-old team.
Under Kontura, the U.S. boys scored 294 points to beat Mexico (271) and three other boys' teams, while the U.S. girls scored 317 points to beat Canada (306) and four other girls' teams. The United States also won the overall championship with 611 total points.
As team leader of the United States contingent, which included six other officials, Kontura had duties including coaching, representing the United States at meetings, and attending to the athletes.
Kontura will begin his second season in Berkeley this fall at the helm of the men's and women's diving teams.
