Sept. 2, 2005

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS - The No. 19-ranked Cal volleyball team (2-0) featured a balanced offensive attack with four players recording double figures in kills as the Golden Bears defeated host Texas State (1-1), 3-0 (30-19, 30-28, 30-17) Friday night in the opening round of the CenturyTel/Classic Honda Premier in San Marcos, Texas. The win over the Bobcats gave Bear coach Rich Feller his 100th victory at Cal since taking over the program in 1999.

The Bears were led by sophomore Ellen Orchard and senior Alicia Powers with 13 kills apiece. Freshman Morgan Beck chipped in 12 kills and sophomore Angie Pressey finished with 10 kills. Junior libero Jillian Davis had a team-high 13 digs and junior setter Samantha Carter recorded 49 assists. Cal concluded the match with a .293 team hitting percentage and had seven service aces, including two aces apiece from Powers and senior Jenna Brown.

Orchard, who hails from Houston, finished with a .765 hitting percentage with 13 kills and no errors in 17 attempts. Powers hit .579 (13k, 2e, 19att) on the evening. Texas State, which was an NCAA Tournament participant last season, was led by Elizabeth Nwoke with nine kills. The Bobcats had a .143 team hitting percentage.

'This was a great night for us,' said Feller. 'We hit .293 as a team and really spread the offense around. Not only did we have four players with double figures in kills, we also had 16 blocks and seven service aces. We are ready to go again tomorrow.'

Cal will next face Morgan State Saturday, Sept. 3 at 12:30 p.m. and Albany on Sunday, Sept 4 at 1 p.m. Both Texas State and Albany made the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year. Cal has won seven regular season tournaments in the past three seasons.
