No. 23 Cal Defeats Montana, 3-1, on First Day of Cal Invite
Sept. 2, 2005
BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 23 California opened the 11th-annual Cal Invitational with a 3-1 victory over Montana Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears improve to 2-0-1, while Montana falls to 0-2-1.
'It was what we expected out of Montana, the style and system we were planning to play against,' Cal head coach Kevin Boyd said of the Grizzlies' direct, aggressive style. 'It's one thing to tell the team that this is what's going to happen. It's another to actually play against it. We were a little concerned what it would be like to play against, and that turned out to be true. It was a tough team to play.'
Forward Dania Cabello delivered a 15-yard blast in the 15th minute to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. The goal was the senior's second of the season.
The Grizzlies held a 6-4 edge on shots in the first half, but the Bears entered the locker room ahead, 1-0. Less than three minutes into the second half, Cal forward Liz Eisenberg was fouled in Montana's penalty box and converted the ensuing penalty kick for her second goal of 2005. The goal ended up being the senior's second game-winning goal of the season and fifth in the last two years.
In the 53rd minute, Montana forward Lindsay Winans scored the Grizzlies' first goal of the season to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Cal created more dangerous scoring opportunities and maintained better possession as the second half developed and out shot Montana, 11-1, after halftime. Winans' goal was the Grizzlies' only shot of the second half.
Bears forward Katie Ratican provided an insurance goal by nailing a 30-yard free kick in the 85th minute for her first goal of the season.
Junior Anna Key made her inaugural start of the year in goal and grabbed four saves to secure the win for Cal. Montana goalkeeper Sarah Braseth snared five saves for the Grizzlies.
'We won, but none of us our satisfied with the way we're playing,' Boyd said. 'Maybe, that's good. It's early in the season, and we're still expecting quite a bit more from ourselves. I feel like we're getting good play off and on. One game its one person. Another game it's another person. We need to get consistent, solid play out of everybody. Alivia (Mazura) had another great game. Dania had a very good game. Gidget (Liz Eisenberg) caused them some problems obviously.'
The tournament opened with Saint Mary's blanking UC Santa Barbara, 1-0, on a goal from Nikki Schrey in the 65th minute. The Gaels held a 12-9 edge in shots.
Cal faces UC Santa Barbara (1-2) at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4 on day two of the Cal Invitational. Saint Mary's (2-1) plays Montana at noon. Today's games marked the debut of a new soccer scoreboard on the East side of Edwards Stadium.
