Coral Gables, Fla. - In a rematch of last year's NCAA College Cup Semifinals, the third-ranked UCLA women's soccer team battled rough weather and a tough Princeton team Friday, coming away with a 1-0 victory over the 14th-ranked Tigers at the University of Miami. With the win, the Bruins improve to 3-0 on the season, while Princeton falls to 0-1.

Lightning in the Miami area forced more than an hour rain delay during halftime and the game was actually stopped in the 72nd minute as a result. However, after a goal by Bruin defender Mary Castelanelli in the 55th minute was enough to give UCLA its third victory of the season.

'This was a good result in difficult circumstances,' said UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis. 'Princeton is a very good team. I didn't think we played that well in the first half, but we came out strong in the second and Mary scored a great goal.'

That goal, the first of Castelanelli's career, was officially scored at the 61:30 mark of the second half on an assist by senior Iris Mora. It came on a 25-yard shot into the top corner of the net, beating the outstretched hands of Princeton goalkeeper Madeleine Jackson. Just 10 minutes later the lightning returned and the match was called.

Despite the close score, UCLA actually had a significant advantage in the final statistics, outshooting the Tigers 13-1 on the evening. Castelanelli and freshman Christina DiMartino led UCLA with three shots apiece. Bruin goalkeeper Valerie Henderson registered her third victory of the season, playing all 72 minutes in goal.

UCLA is playing this weekend without the services of Kara Lang, who has returned home to play with the Canadian National Team in two matches against Germany.

The Bruins lead the all-time series with the Tigers, 3-0, after also winning matches in 2001 (2-0) and 2004 (2-0).

UCLA rounds out play at the Miami Tournament on Sunday, taking on Florida Atlantic at 3:00 p.m. (PST).
