No. 19 Cal Volleyball Dominates Morgan State, 3-0
Sept. 3, 2005
SAN MARCOS, TEXAS - The No. 19-ranked Cal volleyball team (3-0) had an impressive performance against Morgan State (0-3), defeating the squad from Baltimore, Maryland 30-9, 30-9, 30-16 Saturday in the second round of the CenturyTel/Classic Honda Premier in San Marcos, Texas. The win over Morgan State gave Bear coach Rich Feller his 400th career victory (400-246, .619) in 12 years at Colorado State (1983-1996) and now in his seventh year at Cal (1999 -).
The Bears outhit Morgan State, .356 to - .152, with sophomore Angie Pressey and freshman Kat Reilly pacing Cal with seven kills apiece. Pressey was impressive with a .357 hitting percentage (7k, 2e, 14att), but true freshman Reilly, who hails from Plano, Texas, was nearly perfect, recording a .778 hitting percentage with seven kills and no errors in nine attempts.
Junior setter Samantha Carter was also outstanding as she tied a school record with nine service aces, equaling the Cal record set by Gabrielle Abernathy against Arizona State in 2004 (Sept. 23, 2004) and Brook Coulter at Oregon in 1998 (Oct. 16, 1998). However, Abernathy achieved her nine service aces in a four-game match against the Sun Devils, and Coulter achieved her nine service aces in a five-game match against the Ducks. Carter also added 29 assists.
'We had a chance to play everyone on our team today, and everyone did extremely well,' said Feller. 'Now we next take on Albany, who looks like a tough team in the tournament. We are looking forward to it.'
Cal will play Albany on Sunday, Sept 4 at 1 p.m. Both Texas State, who the Bears defeated 3-0 on Friday, and Albany made the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year. Cal will be attempting to win its eighth regular season tournaments in the past four years.
