SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The California men's soccer team upset No. 4 UC Santa Barbara, 2-0, Friday night in both teams' season opener at the UCSB adidas Classic at Harder Stadium.
Junior midfielder Eric Ebert scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 23rd minute of the game. Ebert got the ball just inside the top of the box, dribbled through numerous defenders on the left side of the box and slid a shot past goalkeeper Kyle Reynish.
In the 74th minute, UCSB's pre-season All-American defender Andy Iro earned his second yellow card and subsequent ejection. Cal (1-0) took advantage of the weakened Gauchos' defense scoring in the 82nd minute. Senior forward Calen Carr crossed the ball to sophomore midfielder Luke Sassano, who one-timed the ball past Reynish to score Cal's insurance goal. One minute later, UCSB senior co-captain Nate Boyden earned a red card.
Cal senior goalkeeper Eric Kronberg made four saves in the win, while Reynish made five saves. This marks Kronberg's ninth-career shutout at Cal.
