Thornberry, Roberts Pace Cal at USF Invitational
Sept. 3, 2005
SAN FRANCISCO - Sophomore Amanda Thornberry and junior Eric Roberts led the California cross country teams at the USF Invitational at Golden Gate Park. The Golden Bears sent only seven runners to the season-opening event, which wasn't enough to produce a team score.
Thornberry finished the 6K race in eighth place in a time of 18:44.1. Last year, Thornberry also paced the Bears at the USF Invitational but grabbed 25th (18:40.9). Junior Brooke Wells placed 10th (18:49.1), and sophomore Rebecca Yau grabbed 13th (18:54.6) at this year's event.
Stanford took top honors in the team competition with 42 points, behind a one-two finish from Arianna Lambie (18:18.3) and Julie Allen (18:20.7). Arizona finished second (56), and San Jose State placed third (70).
Cal junior Eric Roberts led his team with a 20th-place showing on the 8K course. Roberts, who redshirted 2004 due to an injury, clocked in at 26:21.2. Junior Micah Parker crossed the finish line in 24th (26:37.6), and redshirt freshmen Eric Lee and Sean Carey placed 26th (26:39.7) and 50th (28:06.4), respectively.
Arizona swept the top three individual spots to win the men's team competition with 24 points, while Stanford was second (35). Obed Mutanya claimed the individual title (24:40.7).
Cal travels to the Aggie Open Saturday, Sept. 10 in Davis, Calif.
