Women Of Troy Say Aloha With Sweep Against Western Michigan

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Senior two-time All-America middle blocker Bibiana Candelas delivered a team-high 19 kills Friday as the No. 7 USC Women of Troy defeated the Western Michigan Broncos, 3-0 (30-20, 30-26, 30-15), at the 2005 Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic.
It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools as both teams are now 2-2 on the season.
USC hit .397 for the match against Western Michigan's .162 total. Candelas hit .545 for the match and added a career-high two solo blocks (three total blocks). Sophomore Diane Copenhagen added 12 kills while senior setter Nena Siljegovic recorded 43 assists and four kills.
Candelas made her presence felt early on with three of USC's first five points as the Women of Troy jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the first game. At 15-7, the Broncos scored four straight points as Shaylen Jackson recorded two kills for a 15-11 deficit. USC stopped the WMU run and went on a mini streak of its own, thanks to two sneak attacks by Siljegovic for a 20-10 advantage. Candelas added three more kills as the Women of Troy took game one of the contest.
Jackson led the Broncos with 10 kills on the afternoon.
It was a back-and-forth tempo in game two with neither team holding more than a two-point lead and WMU holding a 15-14 lead. Late in the game, USC used two three-point streaks to retake the lead, 29-26. Freshman Kelli Tennant registered the kill to hand the Women of Troy a 2-0 advantage in the match.
In game three, USC stuffed the Broncos six times at the net, including two solo blocks by Candelas. Copenhagen's kill started a 12-1 run for the Women of Troy, pushing their advantage to a 21-7 lead before closing out the match.
The Women of Troy travels to the UTSA Dome Rally next weekend in San Antonio, Texas, where USC will face Notre Dame, Florida and Texas A&M at the Alamodome.
