Husky Golfers Start Season in Japan
Sept. 4, 2005
Seattle - The Washington women's golf team travels to Japan this week to tee off the 2005 fall season. The Huskies are one of two U.S. women's collegiate teams competing at the 23rd annual Topy Cup in Fukushima, Japan. The tournament runs Sept. 6-8. Arizona State joins four Japanese university teams in this year's field.
The tournament also features four men's collegiate teams that will face eight squads from Japan.
The Huskies will field a lineup of the five returners that combined to place 14th at last year's NCAA Championship. Headlining that group is senior Paige Mackenzie from Yakima. She was 10th at the NCAAs, marking the first top-10 finish by a Husky at the event.
Mackenzie is currently the nation's No. 2 ranked women's amateur player in Golfweek's rankings. She is coming off a tremendous summer that saw her compete in the U.S. Women's Open, the U.S. Women's Amateur and the North and South. She won medalist honors at the Trans Am before advancing to the finals of that tournament, made it to the second round of match play at the U.S. Amateur, she was 13th at the U.S. Open and placed second at the Colorado Open.
