No. 23 Bears Blank UCSB, 1-0, to Claim Cal Invite
Sept. 4, 2005
BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 23 California blanked UC Santa Barbara, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium on the final day of the 11th-annual Cal Invitational . The Golden Bears improved to 3-0-1, while the Gauchos dropped to 1-3.
'I thought we played better today,' said Cal head coach Kevin Boyd, who recorded his 99th career victory. 'The goals aren't really reflecting it, but in terms of the overall play it was better. We're moving the ball better, the second half especially. We didn't get a goal in that half, but we only gave up two shots per half. I don't think we even gave up too many chances that could have led to shots. It was more of a complete game for us. We've taken a step forward.'
Earlier in the day, Saint Mary's defeated Montana, 2-0. Cal was declared the tournament champion over the Gaels by virtue of the second tie breaker - total goals scored. Cal posted a 3-1 win over Montana on Friday, while the Gaels shut out UC Santa Barbara, 1-0.
Cal reserve midfielder Lindsay Clute netted the only goal of the game today at the 39:00 mark. The senior calmly collected a pass from midfielder Laurie Gartrell and slotted a 12-yard shot inside the far post for her first goal of 2005. Freshman Katherine Daiss also earned an assist by heading the ball to Gartrell.
'(Lindsay) was very composed,' Boyd said. 'That's what you need in there. She got a ball that bounced around a little bit and arrived at her feet. As calm as can be, she tapped it into the corner. That's what you'd like every player to do. Lindsay had a good game today.'
Cal held a 15-4 shot advantage, with Clute pacing the Bears with four shots. Junior forward Katie Ratican also had three shots off the bench for Cal.
Senior goalkeeper Ashley Sulprizio only needed to secure one save for Cal - on a long range shot in the 83rd minute from Kathleen Prieto - to earn her second shutout of the year. The shutout also moved Sulprizio into sole possession for fifth place all-time in school history with 12 shutouts. Jamie Considine posted five saves for the Gauchos.
Cal returns to action against Dartmouth Friday, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m. at the Saint Mary's Tournament in Moraga.
