DAVIS, Calif. -- The host UC Davis Aggies defeated the Washington State volleyball team 3-2 at the Howard Johnson Aggie Invitational Tournament Saturday night. Earlier in the day, WSU defeated the University of Toledo 3-0.

The Cougars out-blocked the Aggies 22 to 9; this was the second 20-plus team blocks match for WSU.

'I was very proud of the team for finding a way to hang in there and fight the whole night long and work our way back into the match,' WSU Head Coach Brian Heffernan said. 'There are areas where we need to make adjustments. We are an inexperienced team in some regards and we need to do a better job of moving the ball around offensively and making defensive adjustments. We are consistently making the same types of offensive attacks and allowing the defense to get set up. This week in practice we want to improve our shot selection and keep the defense off balance. It was a good team effort and we are looking forward to having Te'Ara back in the lineup this week so we can get our team on the floor as it should be in the right positions.

In the morning match, WSU had 20 team blocks in a 30-28, 34-32, 30-25 win over the University of Toledo. Owens led the blockfest with nine followed by Barcus with seven and Davis with six. Barcus was the team-leader with eight kills while Rosin added seven kills. Davis, seeing her first action of the season as the primary setter, had 20 assists while Pendon had 15 digs.

While WSU had a .091 team hitting percentage, the Cougs' strong front line pushed Toledo to a -.013 hitting percentage.

'It wasn't pretty but we'll take it,' Heffernan said post-match. 'It was a really challenging match for our team. We got down in both games one and two early and had to claw right back. I was really proud of the character and the poise and the composure the team showed in finding a way to stay together and in the end pull out the victory in these games.'

WSU hosts the Baden Cougar Challenge tournament Sept. 9-10 at Bohler Gym with teams from Oral Roberts, University of Buffalo and Idaho competing.
