USC Soccer Tacks Up 4-0 Road Win Over UC Irvine
Sept. 4, 2005
Defense became potent offense for the USC women's soccer team in its first road trip of 2005. Sophomore defender Kat Stolpa (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto HS) provided the first successful offensive punch for the Women of Troy with a header off a corner kick from junior midfielder Rosa Anna Tantillo (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla HS) in the 23rd minute of play. From there, the Trojans remained in control, pounding out a 4-0 win over host UC Irvine on Sunday afternoon. The win is USC's second straight shutout victory and puts the Trojans at 2-1 on the season, while UC Irvine's record moved to 1-3.
Stolpa's header marked her first career goal for the Trojans. With the well-placed corner kick, Tantillo notched her fourth assist of the season, athough it was soon followed by a fifth in the early goings of the second half. Stolpa's first-half score gave the Trojans the breathing room they were looking for, and a solid possession game soon gave way to another goal in the 40th minute -- this one care of junior midfielder Jocelyn Hein (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS). Freshman forwards Amy Rodriguez (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita HS) and Nini Loucks (Canyon Country, Calif./Canyon HS) had been taking turns buzzing sharp crosses to the face of the Anteater goal. Once more, the speedy pair teamed up again, with Rodriguez getting the ball to Loucks on the attack. Loucks' shot was saved but got loose from UCI goalkeeper Erin Henry. Hein tracked it down and deposited it in the back of the net for a 2-0 USC lead that would hold tight until halftime.
In the second half, USC kept even tighter control on things. With the Trojan back line holding strong, the Women of Troy kept constant pressure on the Anteaters. In the 54th minute, Tantillo tacked up that fifth assist when she got the ball to Rodriguez in front of the goal. Rodriguez ripped a sharp left-footed shot to the near side of the goal, ballooning the USC lead to 3-0. Three minutes later, USC struck again. This time senior defender Jocelyn Leche (Pinole, Calif./Salesian HS) moved up and delivered a cross for sophomore forward Lauren Brown (Chino Hills, Calif./St. Lucy's Priory) to finish off. Brown get her head on it, and USC's lead was solidified at 4-0.
USC returns to action at UCLA, where the Trojans will face a pair of ranked teams in Colorado on Friday (Sept. 9) at 8 p.m., and then Penn State on Sunday (Sept. 11) at 2 p.m.
