Women's Golf Second After One Round in Japan

FUKUSHIMA, Japan - The Arizona State University women's golf team is in second place after the first round of the Topy Cup, being held Tuesday-Thursday, Sept. 6-8 in Fukushima, Japan.

The University of Washington is leading the event after shooting a seven-over 295 in the first round. ASU is five strokes behind after carding a 12-over 300 in the first round and is followed in the standings by the Japanese women's teams competing in the event (Tohoku Fukushi at 302, Senshu at 311, Nihow at 312).

Sun Devil senior Alissa Kuczka is leading the Sun Devils individually and is in second place after carding a one-under 71 on Tuesday. She is three strokes behind Washington's Paige Mackenzie who turned in a four-under 68 in the first round.

Junior Tiffany Tavee is tied for 11th at two-over 74, while junior Charmaine Erasmus stands in tie for 18th at five-over 77. Sophomore Brooke Todare shot a 78 on Tuesday and is tied for 20th, and freshman Jennifer Osborn is tied for 25th at nine-over 81. Junior Lindsay Anderson, who is playing as an individual, is in 33rd place after one round (87).

The Topy Cup continues Wednesday and Thursday at the par 72, 6,036-yard Tanagura Country Club.

In other Sun Devil news, freshman Azahara Muñoz is playing for the European team at the 2005 PING Junior Solheim Cup in Westfield, Ind., where the United States and Europe are all square 6-6 after the first round. Muñoz, who hails from Malaga, Spain, and her partner, Marta Silva of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, lost their morning four-ball match to Catherina Wang of Orlando, Fla., and Kimberly Kim of Pahoa, Hawaii, 1-up.

The pair then rebounded with a 3 & 2 victory over Wang and Jennie Arseneault of Grinnell, Iowa, in the afternoon. The PING Solheim Cup will be decided in singles matches on Wednesday at the Bridgewater Club in Westfield, Ind.

Following this week's action, Arizona State will travel to Franklin, Tenn., for the Mason Rudolph Championship Sept. 23-25. Vanderbilt University will host the tournament at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin.
