USC's Wijesekara Wins High Jump at 16th Asian Athletic Championships
Sept. 7, 2005
USC sophomore Manjula Wijesekara cleared 7-5 1/4 (2.27m) to win the gold medal in the high jump at the 16th Asian Athletic Championships at Munhak Stadium in Incheon, South Korea on Sept. 4.
Wijesekara matched his career-best jump, which had established the junior record in his native country of Sri Lanka.
He competed in the 2004 Athens Olympics for Sri Lanka, where he placed 10th in the qualifying rounds. He also competed in the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland last month, but did not reach the finals.
In his first season at USC, Wijesekara jumped a season-best 7-4 1/2 at the Mt. Sac Relays in April.
Wijesekara will team up with NCAA high jump champion Jesse Williams again in 2006, giving the Trojans a very strong 1-2 punch in the high jump.
