Sept. 8, 2005

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Two members of the Husky men's tennis squad were chosen to participate in the upcoming Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships, the first event of the 2005-06 college tennis season and the first of three national championships. Junior Alex Slovic and freshman Patrik Fischer will represent Washington in the tournament. The University of Tulsa plays host to the event which runs from October 3-9.

The All-American Championships begin with a series of qualifying rounds where players can win their way into the 64-player and 32-team main singles and doubles draws, joining a number of automatic qualifiers. Slovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) is an automatic entrant into the main draw that begins October 6 thanks to his preseason ITA ranking of 23. Fischer, a native of Switzerland, will have to win his way into the main draw in what will be his collegiate debut.

Slovic and Fischer, ranked 38th as a doubles duo, are also entered in the qualifying draw for the doubles tournament.

Last season, Slovic lost his first round match in the main draw before coming back to win four matches to win the consolation draw.

The ITA All-American Championships have been played annually since 1979 and are the first of three majors in collegiate tennis. The second national event is the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the third event is the NCAA Championships in May. The singles championship will be highlighted by the top 75 players in the TIA's preseason national singles rankings.
