No. 9 Cal Downs Vanderbilt, 3-0
Sept. 9, 2005
BERKELEY - The California men's soccer team defeated Vanderbilt, 3-0, Friday afternoon in its home opener at the ninth-annual adidas Cal Legacy Classic at Edwards Stadium. Cal improved to 3-0, while Vanderbilt moved to 2-1.
'Vanderbilt played an excellent first half and kept us on our heels,' said Cal head coach Kevin Grimes. 'At halftime, I thought we re-grouped, needed a couple of adjustments and played much better in the second half. Vanderbilt is a very good team and pushed us to the limit, but in the second half, I think our attacking play was quite good. We were able to get three goals and a victory. It was a nice win.'
Cal went scoreless in the first half, taking only two shots. But the Bears came back strong in the second half with senior defender Tyson Wahl scoring what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 47th minute off a penalty kick. This marks Wahl's first game-winning goal of his career.
Less than 10 minutes later, Wahl assisted senior midfielder Pieter Berger on Cal's second goal in the 58th minute. Berger's goal marks the 10th goal of his career.
Sophomore forward Javier Hil insured Cal's victory over the Commodores, scoring the Bears' third goal in the 78th minute. Hil came down the left side of the field to score from 20 yards.
Senior goalkeeper Eric Kronberg recorded four saves for the Bears, playing 85 minutes. Junior goalkeeper Mike Oseguera saw action today, stepping into the game with five minutes remaining and recording one save.
