Volleyball Takes Doan NAU In Straight Sets

TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Arizona State University freshman outside hitter Margie Giordano recorded 16 kills, four aces and nine digs to lead the Sun Devils to a convincing three-game sweep over Northern Arizona Friday afternoon in the second match of the Wyndham Buttes Sun Devil Classic. Game scores were 30-20, 30-27, 30-17 in favor of the Sun Devils.
ASU snapped a three-match losing streak to improve to 2-4 on the season. NAU, who beat the Sun Devils in straight sets last season in Flagstaff, fell to 0-4 on the season.
Giordano (Glendale, Ariz.) led all players with her 16 kills and set a career high with her four aces. She also added one solo block to total a career high 21.0 points. Junior outside hitter Nicole Morton (Fallbrook, Calif.) also reached double figures in kills with 10 and had three blocks.
Sophomore libero Sydney Donahue (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) had a match-high 17 digs and junior outside hitter Nina Reeves (Gilbert, Ariz.) added 10 to anchor the Sun Devil defense. Sophomore setter Rachel Mittelstaedt (Phoenix, Ariz.) recorded 34 assists in her first start of the season.
NAU senior outside hitter Ellie Butterfield led the Lumberjacks with eight kills and senior libero Marie Pastores recorded 11 digs.
ASU returns to action this evening against Auburn at Wells Fargo Arena. The match is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. or 30 minutes following the conclusion of the NAU-Texas State match (starts at 5:30 p.m.). Auburn beat Texas State in five games (34-32, 23-30, 30-19, 26-30, 15-7).
