No. 3 Bruins Fall to No. 4 Penn State, 1-0 in Double-OT

Sept. 9, 2005

LOS ANGELES - The fourth-ranked Penn State women's soccer team handed No. 3 UCLA its first loss of the season Friday evening, registering a 1-0 double-overtime victory in the first match of the 2005 UCLA Women's Cup at Drake Stadium. The Nittany Lions, who avenge a 4-0 loss to the Bruins in the last meeting between the two teams back in 2003, improve to 5-0 on the season. UCLA falls to 4-1 with the loss.

Penn State senior Tiffany Weimer tallied the only goal of the evening at the 104:13 mark of the second overtime period. Junior midfielder Jean Rettig gathered the ball on the right side and was able to slip a perfect pass up the middle, hitting Weimer in stride. Weimer took a touch before hitting a shot past a diving Valerie Henderson for the victory. Prior to that goal, Henderson, who finished with four saves on the evening, made several diving stops to keep the Bruins in the match.

Although UCLA owned a 14-9 advantage in the final shot count, both teams finished with five shots on goal. The Bruins, who dominated much of the first half, were led by Kara Lang, who had six shots on the evening. The tables were turned in the second half, with Penn State getting the better of the play.

Penn State goalkeeper Erin McLeod finished with five saves on the evening.

The evening match of the Women's Cup on Friday features Colorado and USC. UCLA will try to regroup when it faces the Buffaloes on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. That match will be followed by Penn State and USC at 2:00 p.m.
