No. 6 Florida Wins Five-Game Thriller Against No. 8 USC
Sept. 10, 2005
SAN ANTONIO - Jane Collymore registered a career-high 30 kills Saturday as the No. 6 Florida Gators held off the No. 8 USC Women of Troy with a thrilling 3-2 (23-30, 30-19, 30-27, 21-30, 15-12) victory at the UTSA Dome Rally in the Alamodome. Collymore accounted for 36 points on the afternoon as Florida improved to 7-0 on the season.
USC fell to 2-4 overall despite a career-high 24 kills from sophomore Diane Copenhagen (Mountain View/St. Francis HS). Freshman Kelli Tennant (Temecula/Chaparral HS) hit a team-high .385 with 13 kills and five digs while senior Staci Venski added 17 kills for the Women of Troy.
Tennant was perfect in game one with five kills, leading USC to a 19-11 advantage. Florida bounced back and cut the deficit to four before senior Bibiana Candelas recorded the kill to halt the streak. Copenhagen used two back row kills to push the tempo and capped the game win with her sixth kill of the match.
The Gators jumped out to an early 9-2 lead in the second game on the back of Collymore, who registered three kills early. She continued her torrid pace with 11 kills for the game, as well as using her potent jump serve for two aces. Florida had a nine-point lead at one point, hitting .400 for the game.
It was a back-and-forth battle in the pivotal third game as Collymore once again dominated with a few kills and one service ace to move the Gators to a 15-10 lead. The Candelas/Copenhagen tandem, however, evened the game at 16 thanks to a 6-1 run. UF called a time out and jumped out of the gate with four straight points. It was another see-saw run as USC used a time out to reel off five straight points for a 21-20 lead. Collymore used a kill and solo block to turn the tables as UF led, 23-21. USC tied the game with two straight points, but the Gators used Collymore and her three kills to pace a close game three victory.
With the score 11-10 for USC in the fourth game, the Women of Troy busted out with seven straight points before Florida bounced back with a mini 4-1 run. At 19-14, Marcie Hampton put a kill away for the Gators after a long rally before Copenhagen delivered a back row kill. Katelyn Bishop used a couple of kills as the Women of Troy hit .400 to force the deciding fifth game.
Tennant used a kill off Kisya Killingsworth's block for the game's first point. A hitting error by Collymore made it a 2-0 lead before the Gators got their first point on a USC service error. A questionable call against the Women of Troy led to a 4-4 tie, but USC regained a 6-4 advantage when Tennant hit another one off the Florida block. Both sides traded points before a double hit call against USC tied the game at 8-8. Another questionable double hit call gave the Gators a 10-9 lead as Florida slowly pulled away. Collymore put the exclamation point on the match as the Gators continued their perfect start.
The Women of Troy concludes tournament action tomorrow against No. 13 Texas A&M at 1 p.m. USC will then host Pepperdine on Friday (Sept. 16) at 7 p.m. at the Lyon Center. Friday's match will be carried live, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
