Senior captain Kate Neeper and junior Kristen Berglas paced the USC women's cross country team today (Sept. 10) and led them to a ninth-place finish at the UC Irvine Invitational at Central Park in Huntington Beach, Calif. Only the minimum of five runners competed for the Trojans in the invitational.
Neeper, running in her first cross country race since November of 2003 due to injuries, ran the 5k race in a time of 19:11 to finish in 23rd place. She was followed closely by Berglas, who had a time of 19:20 to finish 27th among the 179 runners, which included 67 runners that did not count in the team competition.
Junior Christina Eads, who led the Trojan runners last week at the Cal State Fullerton Jammin Invitational, finished 51st among the runners in the team competition with a time of 20:14.
Freshman Megan Kelly ran a strong first race for the Trojans to finish in 63rd place among the runners in the team competition, with a time of 20:39.
USC's final runner was sophomore Sara Fusco, who ran a time of 23:16 to place 107th.
The Trojans' nine-place finish put them exactly in the middle of the team competition, as 17 schools entered. Chico State won the team competition with 48 points and the Trojans finished with 271 points.
The USC cross country team's next meet will be on Sept. 24 at the Pepperdine Invitational in Malibu, Calif. Trojans Treani Swain, Laura Strachan and Sarah Sisco are expected to compete for the first time this season in the event.
