Idaho Sweeps Cougar Volleyball to Win Baden Cougar Challenge

PULLMAN, Wash. -- The visiting Idaho Vandals swept the home court Washington State volleyball team to take the title at the Baden Cougar Challenge Tournament before 1,186 fans at Bohler Gym Saturday night, 30-27, 30-22. 30-21.
Idaho moves to a record of 7-3 while the Cougars drop to 4-3 after winning their first two matches of the tournament.
UI's Meghan Brown was named the tournament MVP in spite of having to leave the second game for a while after turning her ankle. She had four kills in the WSU match but was the Vandals' leader in the first two matches. Kati Tikker and Amanda Bowman each had 14 kills and Stacy Sode had 18 digs. Saxony Brown had 46 assists. Tikker, S. Brown and Erin Curtis were also named to the all-tournament team.
Idaho hit .235 as a team and landed 13 service aces, including five from Saxony Brown.
WSU hit a meager .096 and had no hitter in double-figures but out-blocked the Vandals 12 to 4. Natalia Owens led the team with eight kills and had five blocks. Jen Barcus and Brittany Johnson each had six blocks. Jalen Pendon dug up 10 balls.
Owens and Jessie Camp joined Oral Robert's Ori Zuzic in completing the all-tournament team.
'I think that we were too excited because everyone wants to beat Idaho, you know, we're their rivals and everything so I think we just got crazy and we were out of control,' WSU's Owens said. 'We didn't play like the first two (tournament matches).
WSU Head Coach Brian Heffernan said, 'We didn't play very well tonight. Hopefully this team will respond in a determined fashion, realizing that A, I think we have a very good team. B, we didn't play very well tonight. I hope that the team looks at this and says you know this is not how we are capable of playing and comes back into practice with a even more determined and focused effort.'
In Saturday's first match, WSU defeated Buffalo 30-23, 24-30, 20-24, 30-25. The Cougars were led by Owen's 19 kills and eight blocks. Davis had 45 assists, a match-high 16 digs, four aces and five blocks. Buffalo's leaders were Katie Weekley, 15 kills, Amy Brown 48 assists, Nikki Morzenti 15 digs, and Lauren Burd four blocks.
Idaho took a four-game match from Oral Roberts, 28-30, 30-21, 30-21, 30-21, 31-29. Meghan Brown and Erin Curtis combined for 37 kills for the Vandals and Brown teamed with Stacy Sode for 24 digs. ORU's ORi Zuzic led all players with 22 kills while Kim Snow had a match-high eight blocks.
Oral Roberts(2-4) took a 3-1 victory over Buffalo (4-3) in the early evening match, with game scores of 30-22, 30-26, 22-30, 30-18. Zuzic led ORU with 25 kills, Arnold had 50 assists and Alves had 18 digs. Weekley and Clark combined for 24 kills for Buffalo as Garcia had 21 digs and Weekly also had 9 blocks.
Washington State will take on Gonzaga Tuesday, Sept. 13, at the Martin Center in Spokane and then travel next weekend to a tournament at Saint Louis University.
